COMFY COUCH POTATOE

Get into the habit riding your recumbent bike regularly for at least 30 minutes a day...

Why you ask?

Because hey, you've seen my food posts and I've been called a foodie! Covid years2020/2021/2022, I maintained the name ''DoorDash Queen.'' Sure. Me bad.

Peak covid years, we were ALL stuck in our bubbles. Bubble that! I was not going to be denied of foods I enjoyed, let alone fight for toilet paper in the aisles. A true test on all of us mentally. Some failed, while others flew under the radar.

As some know,I am left side paralysis from my stroke March2014.

Don't get me wrong, I am flattered by your comments when I post dishes I've whipped up with only my right hand, while my flaccid left side just hangs.

October2020, the thought of getting any kind of excercise ...was difficult. Yes, many of us turned into comfy couch potatoes. I could only count with one hand a few that maintained their discipline even with covid at its peak. Covid turned us into Shrek's. The words. ''in moderation'' lingered in my brain...there had to be an answer.

The problem was, I could not ride a regular bike, let alone a stationary bike without supporting my injury from my stroke. It sucks I know. But, I am a firm believer there's answers to every equation or problem to finding a solution.

I called up several gyms and to my discovery, I could either use their ''recumbent bikes'' or buy my own, in the comfort of my home!

I was skeptical, considering people have purchased excercise machines only to be abandoned in their garage, basements, collecting dust, used as a coat hanger, and eventually finding a new home on marketplace.

I didn't want that. I told myself, if I go ahead with this, I want it in my face! comfy couch potatoes or not. It would remind me to excercise at least 30 minutes a day as much as possible, in the comfort of my home. The weather was not going to used as an escape goat.

It arrived.

I, with my flaccid left side struggled to find a way to strap my left foot to the pedal. We tried everything from duct tape, my ankle boot, different runners, more tape etc., only to have my flaccid left foot fall off and didn't want to co-operate.

I was disappointed.

''My bike was now parked in my livingroom taking up space. I hated it.

Alone one evening, I was determined to figure this out. I sat on my bike, my right side being my strength and balance, I tried again strapping my left foot. Although it didn't go smoothly, my left foot was in. To me that was a step forward, a positive thing.

I was able to make a couple rotations and it felt great. It didn't take long for my left foot to slide off the pedal again and I was getting exhausted after 3 rotations. Three rotations was a lot, it felt like I was behind a bus pushing it with all I had. Only stroke survivors who lost their mobility will understand that. My mind and body had to be re trained.''

Fast forward 2024 (4 years later). WE, as stroke survivors must learn to UNDERSTAND. And, learn to ADAPT. It is then we can move forward and embrace the new you! Sure, we need to learn to do things differently from how we used to do things, but that is called PROGRESS.

''repetition'' the action of repeating something.

I had to relearn, teach, and be patient with my injured side (leg). If I were to analyze this, my left leg/foot has no muscle tone (for others who cannot understand, think of a boiled spaghetti) now, try walking on that. With balance and full concentration with our cognitive brain (which is always doing over time), we slowly re wire the connections and each moment, each day, the brain remembers...and it becomes a little easier each time.

NOW, if my statement above is incorrect. I am here to pass on to my fellow stroke survivors around the world... I ride my recumbent bike 30 mins. a day (4-5 days week). I strap her on, she does not slide off,and we ride.

THE COGNITIVE BRAIN HAS TRAINED HER WELL.

Buying my recumbent bike was the best thing I did in 2020. cp

Thank you...
Without the help  and suggestions from my fellow stroke survivors around the World, this site would not exist.  As I celebrated my 10th year post stroke March 2024, this site was created to reach out to our fellow stroke survivors from serious topics to funny conversations.  It is here to give each other support/hints on what worked and what didnt't.  What may have worked for one stroke survivor may not work for another, but if it helped one person, It is progress.  This site is always being updated...keep in touch.
Adapting. Understanding. Empowerment.
