The Travel Bug in you

Writer's picture: christineperrot1christineperrot1

This mornings topic was about the weather, eventually the conversation piece about the eclipse April 8th (this year of course) and how people travelled to witness a part of history.

Did you know there are 50 states in the US? Apparently, some Americans have never travelled outside the state they live in or travelled to more than 8 states, and flying over does not count. Hmmmm, I thought. I counted 11.

BTW, I had an interesting topic with my wheelchair assistant, as he strategically maneuvered me to my next flight. ''you mean restroom.'' Long story short, I couldn't let this conversation go, it really depends on where you are. I say bathroom...

There's washroom and there's restroom. Well, you're not really there to rest are you? And sure, I won't be making a pit stop to take a bath before my next flight either. We settled on washroom and laughed about it. Just go with the flow I say.

My fellow stroke survivors, if you want to venture out of your comfort zone don't over think it, proceed to the airport and amaze yourself! Scary? Absolutely. Crazy? Double Absolutely! Why wouldn't it be? We are dealing with anxieties, the noise levels, the crowd, too many humans!, your mobility, brain fog to concentrate, keeping your composure to feel normal and not panic, make sure you eat, post notes all over your passports to remember ''Anxiety'' you're something else! and that's just a few to list. I don't recall any of that before my stroke! I was relaxed.

It became more and more of an experiment as I tested my own cognitive brain on ''repetition,'' was it the key to facing our anxieties, the ''unknown?''

My testimony. I boarded 18 planes in 2019 before covid hit officially March 2020. My answer is Yes repetition is the key.

My last flight before covid, Jan 2020 Chicago to Vancouver, it snowed and 1100 planes were grounded. What a gong show. Chicago airport looked like a scene from the 'Walking Dead' I uttered to the pilot sitting next to me, ''I don't want to fly for awhile'' (poor man had been rerouted 3 times trying to get home). Covid hit, and the buzz was about hoarding food and toilet paper. Really? My theory, an experiment. Someone placed a panic button to human behaviour.

MIND OVER MATTER VS. ANXIETY about my first flight (remember that write up?) But as I recall my doctor saying back in 2018,'' if you don't try, will you have regrets for not trying?'' I pulled over, cried, wiped my tears and bought my first airline tickets to Las Vegas Dec2018. It was the most amazing adventure for a left side paralysis stroke survivor, Me! I never looked back.

Kudo's to this travel buggy, it's sturdy, airport approved, folds easily like a lawn chair, and gives you the independence travelling with your love ones. I have tried other electric wheelchairs (tba) But in all honesty, this one was the most comfortable. I felt secure in it and safety is huge for us stroke survivors, especially with left or right side paralysis. I give it an absolute THUMBS UP! HIGHLY RECOMMEND. ENJOY.

Thank you...
Without the help  and suggestions from my fellow stroke survivors around the World, this site would not exist.  As I celebrated my 10th year post stroke March 2024, this site was created to reach out to our fellow stroke survivors from serious topics to funny conversations.  It is here to give each other support/hints on what worked and what didnt't.  What may have worked for one stroke survivor may not work for another, but if it helped one person, It is progress.  This site is always being updated...keep in touch.
Adapting. Understanding. Empowerment.
